The Mirror 14 Story
Devoti D-One v Phantom

To say 'two very different boats' would be a complete misunderstatement! The Phantom, launched back in 1971, has developed into a highly sophisticated single hander aimed clearly at the big boys scene. Light, flat and with what has been, up until now, an impressive spread of sail, the Phantom has carved out a niche in the UK dinghy scene as a successful handicap boat that is backed up by a strong 'fleet sailing' presence. However, this success does not come cheaply, with the Phantom gaining something of a reputation in some areas for 'cheque book' sailing.

The Devoti D-One credentials are listed else where, but the clear difference is that this is a very new boat, utilising state of the art materials, rigged with an even bigger main than the Phantom, plus a large asymmetric spinnaker.

Viewed from astern, the narrowness of the D-One hull can clearly be seen. The picture also shows how the wings give the helm addition height above the water level.
