1965-1967 IYRU Single handed Trials
1965 - Weymouth
Bobby Turner in the Whippet 3
Bill Kemper - the 'Father' of the Fireball, racing the boat single handed - and from a sliding seat, against the best of the new breed of dedicated single handed boats
La Baule - 1966
So close to success. The Jeton, from the great Austrian sailor Hubert Raudaschl, was sailed very hard by Olympic Finn sailor Uwe Mares and could very easily have been chosen by the IYRU on the strength of it's results across the 3 sets of trials.
The jeton utilised a unique system of panels that swung outboard to create a 'sliding seat' effect - yet leaving the cockpit clear for when the helm was in the boat (during tacking or gybing - or in light airs). This made the boat very competitive in light to moderate winds, though some concerns were raised about the stresses the panels placed upon the boat's sidedecks.
Along with the Unit from David Thomas, the Jeton was commended to the IYRU Selection Committee, yet at the same time the Contender was given a unamimous recommendation as the 'new' International Single Handed dinghy.
